Beetroot’s Amazing Health Properties

In recent years, beetroot has been gaining more attention as ‘superfood’. Here are some of the great health properties it’s celebrated for.

  • Boosts athletic performance

Some studies have linked the consumption of beetroot to improved athletic performance (see here and here). This is because beets contain high levels of nitrates, and nitrates are said to increase blood flow to muscles.

  • Helps with detoxing

Beetroot is usually a key ingredients in ‘detox juices’. This is because beets are considered highly detoxifying, helping our kidneys to flush out toxins and purify the blood.

  • May lower blood pressure

Some studies have indicated that drinking beetroot juice may lower blood pressure. This is thought to be linked to the high nitrate levels in beetroot.

  • High in vitamins & minerals

Beetroot is high in Vitamin C, which is well-known as an immunity booster. Beets are also high in essential vitamins and minerals like potassium and manganese. Potassium is needed for our nerves and muscles to work well, and manganese is important for our bones, liver and kidneys.

10 Delicious Ways with Beetroot

Here’s some of our favourite ways with beetroot. Where to get your organic beets from? Commonsense, of course!

1. Beetroot crisps

Sweet, crispy and moreish, beetroot crisps are definitely an under-utilised method of getting beets into kids of all ages.  Here’s a recipe from good ol’ Jamie Oliver.

There are so many ways to make a roast beetroot salad pop. We love this Nadia Lim recipe for Roast Beetroot Rocket Spiced Haloumi Salad with Tamarillo Dressing.

 4. Beet Burgers

Beets are a classic addition to home-made vege burgers. For example, these Black Bean & Beet Burgers look mighty tasty.

6. Beetroot Soup

Sweet, sour and deeply warming, borsht is a winter winner. We’re planning to try this recipe for Beet & Black Lentil Borscht from My New Roots.

Juice is one of the tastiest way to get all this good stuff into your body. If you make your own, you might consider our great Juicing Fruit & Vege Box which seasonally includes beetroot. But, if you’re more of a ready-made kind of person, try Beet It, Soul Organics Energiser Bunny Juice,  or Almighty Beetroot, Blackcurrant & Ginger.

 10. Beetroot on pizza

Beet pizza? Trust us, it works! Our Chef Scott Hayles regularly adds grated beetroot to The Commonsense Kitchen pizza, and it’s got us converted.
