Commensense Christmas gifts

Here are some of our golden rules of a green Christmas, Christmas trimmings the commonsense way, and gifts that just keep on giving.

The golden rules of a green Christmas

  • Buy locally: New Zealand produces great food, crafts and clothing. Contribute to your local community and our economy at the same time. Buy New Zealand made!
  • Donate your time: Time is money! Childcare, cleaning, gardening....don't underestimate how awesome this gift can be, especially for a new family, or someone that needs some help in the garden.

Christmas Trimmings the commonsense way....

  • Get a Christmas tree from Aro Valley: The Aro Valley School Christmas Tree Fundraiser has been going since 1976! Funds raised from the selling of trees go towards the Aro Valley Pre-school, Te Aro School and the Aro Valley Community Centre
  • Make your own Christmas tree: If you don't have a large enough pot-plant to disguise as a Christmas tree- make your own! DIY "pine tree"
  • Be a creative wrapper: making your own recycled wrapping paper is fun, snazzy and sustainable. Use the crossword page of the newspaper, or your kids awesome art that you have collected through the year, get some butchers paper and make potato stamp pictures! This makes hours of fun and you can use it again next year!

Christmas gifts that keep on giving

  • Composting is cool: Give the gift of a compost bin. Build someone a compost heap, buy a worm farm or a Bokashi unit. A year round gift that just keeps on giving!
  • Teach someone to sprout: we have great Wrights sprouts starter kits, or make your own! We also sell the mesh lids and bags of sprouting seeds in store
  • Seedlings: This could be a combination gift- give someone some seedlings, a bag of compost and offer your time to help them make a garden. A great gift to give, receive and good for the earth
  • Support our Wellington locals: Buy someone a year long membership to the Wellington Zoo or Zealandia (a fantastic gift for a young kid)
  • The Kiwi Diary 2012: Support the amazing local artists that contribute to this fantastic diary by purchasing the Kiwi Diary 2012. Chock-a-block full of beautiful artwork, intelligent information and fascinating facts.

What do you give to the person who has everything?

Nothing, or rather a big warm fuzzy feeling that they have just changed someone's life in the most positive meaningful way.
