Mulled Wine

June 2, 2021 at 9:43 AM

Now that the days are short and the nights are cold it can be hard to leave the home in the evening.  Mulled wine is the ultimate at home indulgence on a frosty night. Invite your friends over and pair with a simple winter platter.  You won't even need to take off your slippers!

Glasses of mulled wine

Ingredients (serves 4)

  • 1 bottle organic red wine
  • 2 organic oranges, juiced
  • 1  organic orange, sliced
  • cinnamon sticks
  • 3  star anise (or 10-15 broken pieces)
  • 5  cardamom pods
  • 2  shots Cointreau (or other liqueur)
  • 2T honey (or more to taste)

Method

Put all ingredients into a saucepan and bring to a low simmer. Continue to simmer gently for 10 mins to allow the wine to warm and take on the flavour of the spices (but don't boil as this will evaporate the alcohol).

Strain and pour into mugs or glasses. Garnish with a slice of orange.

This recipe can be easily scaled up or down to suit the numbers. It's really just a guide - so feel free to adjust to your liking!

Serve as part of a winter platter with baked camembert and warm olives.
